Coding for Veterans caravan to help train veterans in tech careers

Coding for Veterans is a program that aims to assist Canadian veterans with their transition from military service to a career in the IT sector.

Normally, organizers would run veteran job fairs, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the job fairs got cancelled.

This led organizers to come up with a cross Ontario career caravan that will stop in Kitchener on Tuesday, November 3.

This decision will allow Coding for Veterans to take its message about career opportunities in the tech sector directly to communities across the province.

"It's projected 182,000 IT jobs that are going to go unfilled in the next 24 months and so the opportunities are there for veterans to retrain for these jobs ... and that's why we'll be in Kitchener this Tuesday," said Jeff Musson, Executive Director, Coding for Veterans.

Musson mentioned to 570 NEWS that the beauty of Coding for Veterans is that tuition is 100 per cent covered for qualified veterans through Veterans Affairs Canada.

"So they will get the retraining and skills specifically in two areas, one being software development, and the second area being in cybersecurity."

With the two specific areas, Musson added what he has heard from veterans who have already taken part, is that they are happy with the employment stability, as they are not moving around a lot, as well as being grateful for the compensation, as starting salaries in the IT sector are in the high five to six-figure range.

The Coding for Veterans cross Ontario career caravan will be set up in a COVID-19 compliant manner outside of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 412 in Kitchener, on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
