Family forced to pay for their seven-year-old daughter's feeding tube supplement

Family forced to pay for their seven-year-old daughter's feeding tube supplement
With the Ontario government's cuts to the OHIP+ plan this part of her cancer treatment is paid out of pocket

Abigayle Lobsinger was first diagnosed with Neuroblastoma at the age of three.

In 2017, her family was told by doctors that she was cancer free, but to their dismay the disease returned around Christmas time.

She started treatment in early February, and as part of her treatment she uses tube feeding to gain and maintain weight.

With the changes by the Ontario government, those with private health plans are no longer eligable for under the OHIP+ Plan. Unfortunately, the Lobsinger's private plan does not cover the feed tube supplement so they are left paying out of pocket.

Abigayle's father, Kevin Lobsinger told KitchenerToday with Brian Bourke on 570 NEWS the change came as a shock.

“The pharmacist informed that it is no longer covered, your private insurance plan doesn't cover it, you have to pay, and for us the cost is $437 a case.”

He said on average Abigayle goes through one case a week, which is very costly.

"We didn't ask to be the poster family for this, but if means that we do need to be the poster family to get this mistake rectified and put back into to OHIP, then by all means we have to be the poster family because there is probably more people that are in a worse position," he said.

He said Waterloo MPP Catherine Fife and Waterloo MP and Government House Leader Bardish Chagger have reached out to both the federal and provincial government on his families behalf to help amend these cuts to the OHIP+ Plan.

Agofundme page has been created to help the Lobsinger's with the overwhelming costs.
