Note; for Kitchener-Waterloo Residents the following Buses are available for transportation between the Veterans Clubs in the K_W Area.
Thanks to a donation from Elliot Coach Lines, the Kitchener-Waterloo Veterans Council can continue to offer free transportation to Remembrance Day events for veterans.
Sid Kenmir has been chairman of the Kitchener-Waterloo Veterans Council for 36 years, focusing on transportation for veterans during Remembrance Day.
He says this is the first time the organization was able to get buses for free, which the group paid for in the past.
"We've got it this year." says Kenmir, "We've got the no charge, big, full-sized buses that Grand River Transit has and we're deeply indebted."
On Remembrance Day, Kenmir says the buses will start running at 12:30 p.m. and will stop at the six different veteran hall's in Waterloo Region.
Kenmir says the buses provide an opportunity for veterans from different halls to reconnect without having to drive for long periods of time.
"I can sit there and drink with you, I can have a coffee or a beer, and talk to you because I haven't seen you since last year." says Kenmir.
Kenmir says offering transportation on this day helps not veterans, but their caregivers and families as well.
"They just have a great time that day." says Kenmir, " The buses keep going around in circles, from a veterans club to a veterans club."
"Then they quit at 5:30 p.m. and they go back to that home base, and by that point our guys are back home or where they started from."
Kenmir says using bus services is also meant to decrease drinking and driving incidents on Remembrance Day.
"Don't drive your car that day." says Kenmir, "Get someone to drive it to where the parade starts, and then go back to the veteran's club."
"If you want to drink that day, stay away from driving."
