Waterloo Regional Police Warning Residents about the Social Insurance Number Scam

Waterloo Regional Police are warning residents after receiving reports of people falling victim to the Social Insurance Number scam.

In several reported incidents, victims stated that the fraudsters pretended to be calling from government agencies such as: Revenue Canada, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, Service Canada and selected banks.

During the reported incidents, some of the victims were asked to provide their Social Insurance Number and others were asked for their personal information including their (date of birth, name, address, etc.). In some of the incidents, the fraudster threatened that police were involved.

The Waterloo Regional Police want to remind residents about the risks involved with providing personal information, including your SIN number to someone you donít know. If handed over to the wrong person, it could be used to obtain personal information and invade your privacy.

If you receive a call similar to this, be cautious. Donít provide personal information unless itís to a trusted person or unless you initiated the call yourself.

If someone calls unexpectedly and requests your personal or financial information, try calling the organization they are representing to verify that the request is legitimate. Reputable firms never ask for personal information without significant safeguards.

It's not always easy to detect a scam. If you believe you have been a victim, please report the incident to police by calling 519-570-9777. You can also report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, by visiting their website: www.antifraudcentre.ca
